Welcome to fall! Hope everyone enjoyed a beautiful and relaxing summer.
Although our annual Family Fun Day was months ago, I want to acknowledge the dedication of our many volunteers, who put countless hours into the race and the event after the race. It really does take a village. Our new director, Denise Irving, did a brilliant job in her first year at the helm. The biggest change this year was that I was able to look around and appreciate the energy and love of that day. I no longer think of this as a sad day, or a day just about my girls. It is a day of community, family, and well-being.
Now fall is here and it’s time for us to gather again, for the Beautiful Me Fall Fundraiser. And this one’s for the grown-ups! Get a sitter and a cute outfit and come join us! It’s fun to see everyone dressed up and kicking up their heels and it’s wonderful to feel the love in the room.
These big events bring money that sustains our work for children and also remind us that there are many reasons to celebrate. This summer, Warren and I were humbled to be invited to Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island to speak at a conference on Forgiveness and Gratitude hosted by Glenn and Mindy Stearns. The conference was created to offer Horatio Alger Scholars the opportunity to connect with mentors. The scholars were chosen based on essays they wrote on the hardships they had to overcome.
Warren and I spoke of how we have dealt with our unfathomable situation and how we have chosen to move forward with forgiveness and gratitude. Forgiveness and gratitude have allowed me to be the mom to Kasey that I was to Emma, Alyson, and Katie. Kasey deserves my whole heart and soul, and I could only offer her that once I was able to forgive.
When you truly forgive, your energy changes and your heart is lighter. I wish this for everyone.
See you on October 22!

- Be a Corporate Sponsor or Buy a Journal Ad. We need corporate sponsors for the dinner and beyond, to make our plans for children’s programs a reality. Read about oursponsorship opportunities. We would love to partner with you and your company. You will be in good company! If you would like to buy a journal ad, see here for details.
- Honor a Loved One on the Beautiful Me Wall. Write about what makes your special someone beautiful, and your words will be printed on a Beautiful Me paper doll and displayed at the event. Dolls will be mailed to the recipient afterwards. ($20 each or 6 for $100)

Beautiful Me News
The school year has started, so it’s a busy time for our Beautiful Me program! Though school was out for summer, we still kept busy. On July 31, the Hance Family Foundation was proud to partner with the NYPD & Manhattan District Attorney’s Office at the annual community event National Night Out Against Crime, in NYC’s Lower East Side (shown above). A great time was had by all. See where else we’ve been, and where we’re going next!
Teacher Training on September 24
Calling all mentors! Beautiful Me is expanding so rapidly that we need more teachers. Please consider becoming a certified Beautiful Me instructor and spreading a positive message to girls of all ages. Our next teacher training session is Thursday, September 24, at 7pm, at Floral Park Village Hall. Please RSVP to [email protected]
A Beautiful Graduate
Alissa Cruz proudly wore her Beautiful Me necklace to her graduation. The necklace, a gift from Jackie Hance, is given to young girls who participate in the Beautiful Me program, to remember the girls in whose name the program was created. The three interlocking pink hearts represent Emma, Aly, and Katie Hance and keep them close to the wearer’s heart.
Congratulations on your achievements, beautiful girl!
Grow with Us!
Time to get dirty in the great outdoors! On Thursday, October 15, Floral Park’s 5th graders will gather for the annual Grow with Me program. On this day, the Hance Family Foundation brings learning outside the classroom and into the fresh air, inviting experts to engage the students in a hands-on science experience.
This season, the HFF Volunteer Spotlight shines on Linda Karlovic, whose dedication and hard work make her a wonderful asset to the Hance Family Foundation. We asked Linda some questions and here’s what she had to say:
How did you first get involved with HFF? I first became involved with HFF when I volunteered for Family Fun Day. When I started working for Warren [at WJH Appraisals], I became more involved.
What is your favorite part about volunteering at HFF? I enjoy working with so many enthusiastic people who share a common goal of helping others. Their passion is contagious.
What is your background? I grew up in Brookylyn, and lived there until I moved here to Floral Park in 1993. I was a stay-at-home mom until three years ago, when I started working for Warren. I was active in PTA and Girl Scouts.
What makes you beautiful? I am beautiful because I have a big heart.
